Fixing My Eyes

“Another crossroads Buddy” I murmured to the little dog as we turned around and headed home. Life is full of them. I don’t live in regret but if I had do-overs I would choose the “other path” on a few of them. There is one path that has been my best choice ever. Following Jesus has brought me the greatest spouse and marriage one could have as well as someone infinitely bigger than me guiding through life. Years ago I put it to music. My musical crossroads, do I keep it in the basement or share. I’ll share. It’s not everyone’s style but that’s Ok.

Song of Hebrews 12:1-2 Personalized. I have put it to music, demo quality. I thought it was time to share.

Lyrics

Fixing My Eyes

(Hebrews 12:1-2)

  1.   Alone I stood before the crowd.

Afraid, I said a prayer aloud,

Lord I can’t run the race before me.

So I’m staring down some winding trails.

I must run where others have failed

Follow the Son, He’s gone before me.

        Chorus:

I’m fixing my eyes on Jesus. Never look back, straight ahead.

Fixing my eyes on Jesus, don’t want to lose sight of my guide.

I hear the ones who have gone on before…

Never Give up, don’t look around, straight ahead.

Never Give up, don’t look around, straight ahead

  •   Sometimes I’m lost, sometimes turned around

And it seems that my Lord’s no-where to be found

I feel all alone on a dead end trail.

That’s when I look for the Son, I call for my guide

Fall on my knees and give up my pride.

Then I hear a voice say “Follow Me”

        Chorus:

I’m fixing my eyes on Jesus. Never look back, straight ahead.

Fixing my eyes on Jesus, don’t want to lose sight of my guide.

I hear the ones who have gone on before…

Never Give up, don’t look around, straight ahead

Never Give up, don’t look around, straight ahead.

  • Alone I stood before the throne. I fall before the awesome king. What he thinks of me is all I am.

I see two roads of eternity, the crowd is hushed and I hear him say “well done, come live with me”

I’m older but I still play keyboards and write music, usually when no one is around. A bit like the song bird in the woods.

    1. Thank You Rayla. Ah yes, you know a lot about music between our lines. Sometimes in a minor key but it’s good to let the Lord do the editing as we walk with him.

    1. Thanks Linda. It’s a heart felt song for me and sharing something less than professional quality is not always a great idea for those of us who prefer making music with friends or alone in the back room or basement.

      1. You have many gifts! It reminds me of the Bible passage..Psalm 100:1: “Make a joyful noise unto the Lord…” You have a good singing voice and it is nice to share it with others!

  1. Thank you Kathy. When I think I have a message to share it comes out somehow. Words, songs and pictures for me. The Gary guessing game in a way. My mother used to just help people. Baking and gardening was her love language for others.

  2. So beautiful, Gary!!!
I was wondering if you would come out with some music at some point, I remember you said you have been playing for many years…
In every way you are expressing yourself, what shines through is your deep and true love for GOD and that’s why we all love your posts so much, even if it isn’t our “usual style” of music we listen to on a daily basis, but that’s what makes us brothers and sisters, the love for the same father, so I don’t think anyone who loves GOD could NOT love this song!
Well done and keep them coming in all sorts, your expressions – I am sure HE is pleased with you.
GOD bless you my dear brother!

    1. Thank you Eva. It is a personals song coming out of struggle. I have never wanted to distract the blog with music but it’s a part of my life and I’m ok with sharing some. Mostly I just lead worship about once a month in our local church. I do feel God’s pleasure when I play the piano or write a song.

    1. Thanks GW. Aside from just getting down musically when I play the song live, which is a lot of fun, I am so glad the message seems to resonate with many people.

    1. Thanks Craig. I was thankful to meet a guy while elk hunting who has a studio with great equipment near my oldest daughter. He was glad to let me spend a day with him recording a few originals. I told him it would be a bad thing if I liked doing that too much…that equipment is $$$. God’s timing is always perfect.

    1. Thank you mamalava. Of the things I have done in life, the lord has humbled me (over and over) and used most the music he put within me to share. I am constantly reminded that his gifts are meaningless when turned back on me for credit.

  3. Gary, the Lord has given you many gifts. Thank you for sharing two more of those gifts with us. My youngest was sitting near when I played the song and her comment was that you have a good voice and “Wow, he wrote that.” A high compliment from a teenager and I agree with her completely.

    1. Thank you much. Keith was one of my hero’s growing up. He and Andre Crouch influenced me greatly as I loved their musical style. At the time I did not know how or think of writing songs.

  4. Thanks Gary. Excellent song. Great work. I read through all the comments and prior to reading them, including the prior appreciated comment by dorahak, your song and style reminded me of late 1970s to early 1980s Christian music and especially Keith Green. You are gifted, brother.

I did not see this article when you posted it back in March due to what I wrote about on May 10. I’m glad I found it. You may want to post more of your music. It’s good. Later

    1. Thankyou RJ. Keith Green was quite an influence on me, both in music and also on having an attitude of “no compromise” in following Jesus.
I do not have many songs recorded even though I have enough “good ones” that have endured the test of time to do a bakers dozen album. I have been reworking one to record sometime, hopefully soon to demo quality…It’s about 12th on the list though.
